Strategy Series, Part 5: Strategy Is a Skill, Not a Workshop

Why real strategy is built in the doing, not just the deciding.

Strategy isn’t a slide deck. It’s not a once-a-year offsite. And it’s definitely not something that only lives in the heads of a few senior leaders.

Yet many organisations treat strategy like a seasonal event: defined in a burst of energy, presented with fanfare, and then quietly side-lined as day-to-day demands take over.

Even the clearest strategy fades fast when it’s not part of the daily rhythm, that’s when the drift begins:
> Well-meaning decisions are made that quietly pull things off-course
> No one revisits assumptions because the strategy “was already agreed”
> Priorities compete and there’s no anchor to recalibrate from

But real strategy?

It’s not a moment, it’s a muscle. One that needs regular use to stay strong. Not just decided but developed, not just documented but demonstrated. The best teams treat strategy as a capability that’s practiced regularly, discussed often and embedded across the organisation.

Building strategic muscles means helping teams:
> Frame and reframe problems effectively
> Challenge assumptions constructively, not just instinctually
> Translate big goals into clear, testable actions
> Balance long-term direction with short-term decisions

That’s why frameworks like OKRs work so well, not just because of the goal setting, but because they bring strategy into the room regularly. They create space for teams to ask:
> Are we still pointed in the right direction?
> What’s shifting?
> What are we learning that might reshape the path?

And leadership’s job?  To create the conditions where strategic thinking can actually happen, through better questions, clearer priorities, and the space to pause and reflect. Because when teams know how to think strategically, they don’t just follow the plan, they strengthen it.

At Oak Mountain, we help organisations turn strategy from a concept into a capability.  We guide leaders and teams to think more critically, align more clearly, and execute more consistently.
